Im not sure if this has been brought up before (I did a search) but the Quake 3 Engine is now open source released under the GPL licencing agreement. I think it would be an idea to move True Combat from a mod of Enemy Territory out into a game itself, so there is no longer a reliance on users needing Enemy Territory, you can effectively fix up the issues that plague us (the .pk3 wars for example ![]() Just an idea, the decision is completely up to you. (Note: Even though id's site does not show that the source has been released under GPL, it has. id just hasn't updated their site yet. Wikipedia wrote: The source code to the Quake III engine was previously supposed to have been released around the end of 2004, which would be consistent with an apparent policy of releasing all the 3d engines under the GPL when they are over 5 years old. However, John Carmack announced that the GPL release had been put on hold in order to maintain a grace period, since the Quake III engine was still being licensed to commercial customers who would otherwise become upset over the sudden loss in value of their recent investment. The Quake III source code was released under the GPL on August 19, 2005.

Wrong direction, I'm afraid. TC comes from Q3A engine. ET offers things that "vanilla" Q3A doesn't. Moving backward would be impossible (or at least for a high price, not to mention the workload). Godd idea, but it's been discussed a lot and the Devs made a clear statement. TC:E will stay on WET. However, making TC a standalone game, now that Q3A is opensource, might me a good idea. There are parts of the TCE code that the devs dont want to be set out free for all to copy and edit that is why the move to standalone isn a good idea unless it comes with copyright protection adn away from the GPL or anything similar. |
