  1. What does public alpha mean?
An alpha of a mod is an early/beginning stage. Usually this version is just available to developers and a few, select private testers.

A public alpha means that we are sharing this early stage of the mod with the whole community instead. More testers = better input and bug detection!

  2. How is MWTC different from CoD4?
Since MWTC is in an alpha stage, it shares a lot of visual and audio similarities to CoD4. This is mainly because since the mod is so new, we did not have the time to focus on those areas yet.

However, MWTC has many differences code/gameplay-wise. To view a complete and current list of features and differences so far, please visit the MWTC Overview page.

  3. Do I need CoD4 to play MWTC?
Since MWTC is a mod on CoD4 - that means that, yes, you need Call of Duty 4 to play it.

You can find CoD4 online through Steam (currently $19.99) and other online vendors. You may also find it on discount elsewhere.

  4. How do I install MWTC?
First of all, you need to download the alpha. You can find it on the Downloads page.

The file is in .zip format and includes a few folders within. All you need to do is unpack that archive to your Call of Duty: Modern Warfare install folder.

Just double check to ensure you did not duplicate the folders. There should only be one "Mods" folder in your CoD4 directory with one "TrueCombat" folder within "Mods".

  5. How can I make a shortcut for MWTC so I don't need to go through the CoD4 menu?
An easy way to do this is to find the file "iw3mp.exe" in your main CoD4 directory. Right click that to select "Create Shortcut". Now, right click the new shortcut and select "Properties". In the "Shortcut" tab is a field called "target". Simply add "+set fs_game mods/truecombat +exec truecombat.cfg" to what is already in the target field. Apply! Voila, no more CoD4 menu!

  6. Can I play MWTC on Mac and/or Linux?
The official platforms for CoD4 include Windows/Mac OS X. However, due to lack of resources and the early phase of the alpha, we have only been able to test on Windows.

This is where Mac users come in - we will need your help during this alpha test to see if you will be able to run the alpha properly. Please post your findings on the MWTC Forum.

Linux users, Google searches show that it is possible to run CoD4, so like the Mac testers, please report if you are able to play the alpha properly as well.

  7. How can I host a server for MWTC?
A server set-up "how to" tutorial can be found in this forum thread: MWTC linux server HOWTO.

  8. Which gametypes are included?
MWTC features three gametypes: Bodycount, 1 Life Demolition and Capture the Flag.

  9. There is no server filter for MWTC. How can I find servers?
We are asking, for the time being, that any MWTC Servers start with "TC" or "TrueCombat" as their server name. That way it will be easier for players to filter all the CoD4 servers to find ones hosting the MWTC alpha. Set the filter to Mods: "Yes" and Hardcore: "Yes" - then all servers should start with exactly one initial.

If you know the IP address of a server, you can connect via console (default ~ key) and do so manually "/connect IP".

  10. Why are there only 2 maps?
Since MWTC is in an alpha stage, there was not enough time to convert and remaster maps from other versions of TC.

However, included in the alpha are the sources of both maps. We've included these to help future potential mappers - which we hope will volunteer to help port some older Q3TC/TCE maps to MWTC!

  11. How can I help with the development of MWTC?
The #1 thing that you can do to help with the development of MWTC is to test, play, test, play! If we don't have players and testers, we won't have the feedback necessary to catch errors/bugs, etc.

If you are a mapper, and have some spare time on your hands, and want to help - you are more than welcome to help port old Q3TC/TCE maps to MWTC. We have a forum category dedicated to mapping/3rd party mapping, so register (if you haven't) and jump right in!

A Map Development Kit (with the 2 map sources) can be found on the Downloads page.

  1. What are the features of TCE .49?
  2. What are the minimum system requirements for TCE & CQB
  3. What do I need to play 0.49? Is it a patch or a full install? Is it be backwards compatible?
  4. Where can I download TC:Elite 0.49*?
  5. When I try to connect on some servers in the list it tries to download a bunch of files then disconnects.
  6. I'm not seeing any servers in the in-game browser!
  7. Is TC:E Open Source? How about moving to the Q3 GPL engine or its forks? Can I contribute?
  8. I can't load some maps like Snow and Railhouse!!
  9. I'm getting a huge of amount of lag every time someone fires a gun! Is there any fix for this?

  1. What are the features of 0.49(b)?
The main features are the following:

    • Texture Tone Mapping
    • HDR Lighting
    • Realistic scaling
    • High quality sounds (44khz)
    • Letterbox & widescreen modes - TrueVision
    • Mac version
    • Free climb
    • Free Aim
    • Reworked weapon handling
    • Reinforced OBJ, as Capture the Flag in stock maps
    • Bug fixes

  2. What are the minimum system requirements for 0.49*?
Though TC:E is based on the ET engine, it has higher minimum system requirements:

    • PC with 800 megahertz (MHhz) or higher processor recommended
    • or Mac with 800 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor recommended
    • 320 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended
    • 750 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space*
    • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter with at least 128 megabytes (MB) of video RAM and a monitor
    • Keyboard and Mouse or compatible pointing device

    Recommended system requirements:

    • PC with 1.6 gigahertz (GHhz) or higher processor recommended
    • or Mac with 1.5 gigahertz (GHz) or higher processor recommended
    • 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM or higher recommended
    • 750 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space*
    • XGA (1024 x 768) or higher-resolution video adapter with at least 128 megabytes (MB) of video RAM and a monitor
    • Keyboard and Mouse or compatible pointing device

  3. What do I need to play 0.49*? Is it a patch or a full install? Is it be backwards compatible?
TC:E 0.49* is a ~450MB FULL install(it is not an upgrade from 0.48), the files needed to play it can be found here. If you are a TC:E 0.48 (or earlier) player it is recommended you rename or delete your 0.48 TCETEST folder as it will be overwritten by 0.49*, if this isn't done you may have issues with online and offline play.

  4. Where can I download TC:Elite 0.49*?
First you need to extract the contents of the .zip into your Wolf - ET folder, this should create a folder called tcetest inside that. Then you can create/copy a shortcut and add +set fs_game "tcetest" to the command line, for example on Windows: "C:\Program Files\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\et.exe" +set fs_game "tcetest"

Linux users can also just use it from the console:
    et +set fs_game tcetest

  5. When I try to connect on some servers in the list it tries to download a bunch of files then disconnects.
You are trying to connect to an 0.48 server, unfortunetly there is no easy way to filter them from the 0.49* servers in the server browser. The best way is to sort by the map names, maps that have the obj_ prefix are from 0.49* while the dem_ ones are from 0.48, for example: obj_northport in 0.49* is a rehauled version of dem_northport in 0.48.

  6. I'm not seeing any servers in the in-game browser!
This seems to be a little gremlin that appears and disappears. Something you could try is renaming the servercache.dat within the tcetest folder and trying again. Failing that you could try... Windows users can use The All Seeing Eye, here are instructions on setting up a TC:E 0.49* filter, the filter that comes with ASE shows ALL TC:E servers of different versions, so using this custom filter is recommended. Info Linux and Mac server browsers will appear soon.

  7. Is TC:E Open Source? How about moving to the Q3 GPL engine or its forks? Can I contribute?
TCE is closed source. The engine subject has been discussed already, and the developement team has stated several times that they intend to continue in the W:ET engine as a closed source project. TCE is not currently in a state of active development, so we are not looking for contributors :(

  8. I can't load some maps like Snow and Railhouse!! I get a Hunk_AllocateTempMemor error when trying to load them! What can I do?
You need to set your com_hunkmegs higher, to do so, edit the autoexec.cfg text file located in your tcetest folder (if there isn't any, create one) and add/edit the line:

    Code: seta com_hunkMegs "192"

Set the value (default is 192) to 1/2 of the amount of RAM you have, 256 for 512mb of RAM, etc. If you only have 256mb of RAM and are having this issue, you should really consider an upgrade.

You may need to restart TCE twice after

  9. I'm getting a huge of amount of lag every time someone fires a gun! Is there any fix for this?
The most common solution for this problem is to set the "Wall Mark Lifetime" off, you can do this in the View section of the Options menu. This can also be done by console or editing the cfg's by setting "cg_marktime" to "0".
